The Volcano Updates+ universal app delivers up-to-date news and information about volcanic activity from the United State Geological Survey (USGS), GeoNet (New Zealand) and the Smithsonian Institution. Most reports include an assigned alert level and aviation color code as well as details regarding current activity. Map the selected volcano and share the update via Facebook, Twitter, SMS or email (where supported).
Volcano Activity Reports from the UGSS contain detailed information on US-based volcanoes including an assigned alert level and aviation color code. The USGS typically releases updates to US-monitored volcanoes once a day or more depending on activity. It is a fairly reliable feed with frequent updates, but only for volcanoes monitored by the USGS.
New for Volcano Updates+ we are happy to announce support for New Zealand by way of GeoNet. A collaboration between the New Zealand Earthquake Commission and GNS Science, GeoNet releases volcano updates when new activity warrants, which can be infrequent. However, if there is activity at one of the monitored volcanoes, a timely release of information should take place.
Finally, the Smithsonian Weekly Volcanic Activity Report is a cooperative project between the Smithsonian Global Volcanism Program and the USGS's Volcano Hazards Program. Updated every Wednesday, It contains reports for volcanoes with new activity as well as reports for continually monitored volcanoes around the world. While not a comprehensive list of all volcanoes erupting during the week, it is a concise summary of certain volcanoes around the globe.
New for iOS7 the app has been coded to respond to changes in Dynamic Type and to fetch volcano updates in the background for the active tab (background fetch can be turned off via system settings).
